Wacissa River, Fl

Access:

Wacissa Springs - From Tallahassee travel south on U.S. 27 to S.R. 59. Turn right (south) and continue thru the Town of Wacissa. When S.R. 59 turns west (right turn), continue straight for 1/4 of a mile to the river and springs. Plenty of parking and no fees.  (Maps and Spring Descriptions)

Goose Pasture - From Tallahassee travel south on U.S. 27 to S.R. 59. Turn right (south) and continue through the town of Wacissa. Continue on S.R. 59 to U.S. 98 and turn left (east). Cross the Aucilla River and turn left (north) on the third road from the bridge. Follow the signs to the Goose Pasture recreational area. (Note: these roads are in bad repair and are not recommended for low clearance vehicles)

Trip Descriptions:

While it is possible to paddle the Wacissa from the Springs to Goose Pasture and then to the Aucilla River, I usually make short trips down and back. The current is usually about 2  to 3 mph and the river can get windy in the wider sections.

Wacissa Springs - Put in and take out are the same for this trip, launch from the county park at the springs.  After paddling about an 8 tenths of mile, you should see the entrance for the spring run into Big Blue on your left, paddle up this fast moving stream to see a first class spring.  After returning to the river, paddle on down for about 2.5  miles to Cedar Island. This is where I usually turn around after passing down one side of the island for the return trip.  Round trip to this point and back is about 7 miles. This part of the river is very scenic with lots of wildlife including gators and numerous water birds.

Goose Pasture - Put in and take out are the same for this trip, launch from the Goose Pasture recreational site. For this trip, I paddle from Goose Pasture up river to Wacissa Dam (an old narrow gauge railroad bed) about mid way between the main springs and the launch site.
